Monday - Day 2 (21/2/11)

'I got chills, they're multiplying...'

As well as referring to the bone-shivering -20 degrees it drops to here in Riga (obligatory British weather reference), this is also a nod towards the Latvian 'Glee' experience from today (see below).

Our first experience of Latvian schools today can only be described as 'outstanding' http://r2vsk.edu.lv/. Tangerine-tinted doors, spotless stone staircases and regal windows provided the backdrop to our meeting with motivated, confident and ambitious students at Secondary School 2. As we were shown around the establishment by these prospective engineers, journalists, architects (and the principal) we were all struck by the relaxed but purposeful atmosphere of the school. Student councillors organise a wide range of social and sports events for themselves and annual initiations for newcomers, seem to help build a strong sense of identity and community (lacking in Bradford?). Pupils fluently communicate an awareness of the quality of their education and easily recognise the importance of investing now for their futures, taking ownership over their learning. Extra-curricular activities seem well-attended which brings us back to Glee.

After being swept into a grand hall with superb acoustics (and lovely, non-graffitied, matching chairs!) we were treated to a fantastic musical performance by about 15 students, who did not seem to be the 'outsiders' that Western choirs can sometimes attract. Here were confident teenagers, passionately performing an important aspect of their culture with no awkward embarrassment or apology. Many backs-of-necks had hairs standing on end and many mutterings of 'can't imagine that at our school' were overheard.

Another noticable contrast between UK schools and this Latvian school was diet. Though Jamie's campaign has had a significant impact on schools in Britain, for teachers at challenging schools in the UK, the influence of Red Bull and Haribo wolfed down on the walk to school can be regularly felt in lessons. Latvian learners on the other hand have a diet full of vegetables and fresh, unprocessed food. Perhaps this contributes to the remarkable calmness of the children. There is also a designated graffiti area for kids to 'get it out of their system'!

Students at Secondary School 2 made it clear that their school was ranked and regarded highly (and being just around the corner from Congress containing their DfE you'd hope so!). It will be fascinating to see other Latvian schools this week and build a broader picture of Latvian education and how our learning can help Bradford boys.

"Man drebuļi, viņi reizinot ..." Kā arī atsaucoties uz kaulu drebuļi -20 grādiem tas pilieni šeit Rīgā (obligāti Lielbritānijas laika atskaites), tas ir arī nod uz Latvijas "jautrība pieredze no šodienas (skat. zemāk). Mūsu pirmā pieredze Latvijas skolu šobrīd var raksturot tikai kā "izcilu" http://r2vsk.edu.lv/. Tangerine tonēti durvis, bez traipiem akmens kāpnes un regal logus ja fons mūsu tikšanās ar motivēti, pārliecināti un vērienīgu studentiem vidējā 2 skolā. Kā mēs redzams visā iestādē līdz šie perspektīvie inženieri, žurnālisti, arhitekti (un galvenais) mēs visi bijām pārsteidza ļoti nomierinoša, taču mērķtiecīgi atmosfēra skolā. Studentu padomes organizētu plašu sociālo un sporta pasākumu sev un gada uzsākto jaunpienācēji, šķiet, lai palīdzētu veidot spēcīgu sajūtu identitātes un kopienas (trūkst Bradford?). Skolēni brīvi sazināties izpratni par kvalitātes izglītības un viegli atzīst, cik svarīgi ir ieguldīt tagad savu nākotni, ņemot īpašumtiesības mācību. Papildus mācību programmas aktivitātēm, šķiet labi apmeklēta, kas ved mūs atpakaļ pie jautrība. Pēc tam, kad nes grand zāle ar lielisku akustiku (un jauki, nav graffitied, saskaņojot krēsli!), Mēs tika ārstēti ar fantastisku muzikālo sniegumu par 15 studentiem, kas nav, šķiet, ir "nepiederīgajiem" un ka Rietumu koru dažkārt var piesaistīt. Šeit bija pārliecināti pusaudži, kaislīgi veic svarīgu savas kultūras aspektu, bez neērtas apmulsums vai atvainošanos. Daudzi atbalsta-of-kakliem bija mati stāv uz beigām un daudzi mutterings par "nevaru iedomāties, ka mūsu skolā" tika overheard. Vēl viens ievērojams kontrasts starp AK skolās, un šis latviešu skolā bija diētu. Lai gan Jamie kampaņa ir bijusi nozīmīga ietekme uz skolām Lielbritānijā, skolotāju ir apstrīdēt skolās Lielbritānijā, Red Bull un Haribo ietekmi wolfed uz leju iet uz skolu var regulāri jūtama stundās. Latviešu studentiem, no otras puses, ir diētu pilns ar dārzeņiem un svaigu, neapstrādātu pārtiku. Varbūt tas veicina ievērojamu miers bērniem. Ir arī izraudzīta grafiti zonu bērniem "get it no savas sistēmas"! Studentiem vidējā 2 School skaidri norādīja, ka viņu skolas tika vērtētas un uzskata augsti (un ir tikai ap no Kongresa stūra, kurā norādīts to DfE jūs ceru, ka tā!). Tas būs aizraujoši redzēt citas Latvijas skolām šonedēļ un veidot plašāku Latvijas izglītības attēlu un to, kā mūsu izglītība var palīdzēt Bradford zēniem.
